Melbourne – Getting ready for Tasmania

Before arriving in Melbourne last night from Mildura, we said our goodbyes to those in the working hostel and then sat on a bus for 3 hours, followed by another 5 hours on a train to the city. From there it was a bit of a game trying to find our hostel. Even though we knew what part of town it was in and had the street address with us in our hands, we ended up walking around in circles in the evening trying to find it. Turns out, Australian addresses do not work the same as they do in the States. Numbers are given to a building depending on the number of meters distance they are away from something (an intersection, the beach, a main road, etc) and streets are rarely marked. Most of the time, instead of a street name on a corner there’ll be a sign pointing you to where the library is or a city circle. Without a good map, an address is merely useless.

Once we found the place, though, we were able to drop our bags in the room and head down to the St. Kilda beach, where we met up with Riley. She had been talking about how the night before she spotted penguins along the bulkhead and that now was the perfect time to see them come back to their nests after feeding. That is, after sunset.

But, after we waited impatiently around for not even a full hour after sunset (and still no penguin sightings) we left. Maybe tonight we’ll stick around longer- or I’ll steal Riley’s pictures to claim them as my own. Here’s some pictures we took along the waterfront.
